Fifth period
The Cay is a book about heroism and overcoming prejudice. During The Cay our hero Phillip and his mother leave there home in pursue of getting away from World War Two. They depart on the ship S.S Hato but sadly the ship is torpedoed so Phillip and his mother are separated. Phillip awakes on a raft next to a cat and a black guy named Timothy. In The Cay months go by, and after many events Phillip is changed into a hero and his world is better because he has matured and is no longer prejudice.
In The Cay Phillip and his mothers departure is brought on by the fact that Phillip’s mother is terrified because of the war. The Germans are torpedoing the island Phillip lives on called Curacao because they want to destroy the oil refinery. Phillip’s mother and father argue over Phillip and his mother leaving, Phillips father thinks it would be best for them to stay. Despite what Phillip’s father thinks Phillip and his mother leave on the S.S Hato and the ship is torpedoed.
When Phillip awakes he’s on a raft with a cat and Timothy the man that saved him, a black man. Phillip, Stew Cat, and Timothy are stuck on a raft and Phillips head is swarming with negative thoughts because Timothy is black. Phillip grew up with the impression that blacks and whites were different. One night Phillip closes his eyes to sleep but when he wakes up he can no longer see. Timothy takes care of Phillip twenty-four seven, and when they reach an island that they named The Cay, Phillip had no idea what the island even looked like. During the time on the island Timothy teaches Phillip many needed thinks, he taught him to fish by himself, climb a tree and Phillip ended up helping Timothy recover from Malaria. After months of being on the island a hurricane hits and Timothy prepares, but when it hits Timothy dies and Phillip has to fend for himself. He caught his own fish and he made black smoke on his own.
Because of the black smoke Phillip made he is found by a Navy boat. They Find Phillip naked with stew cat and they bring him home to his parents. When he gets home he has surgery and regains his eyesight and he begins to enjoy spending a lot of time around black people and has no more negative feelings toward black people.
The Cay definitely is a story that describes a true hero’s journey. The whole concept is that Phillip is brought to an island and after a series of unfortunate events he matures, overcomes his prejudices, and with the help of Timothy becomes a true hero. So Phillips Journey is definitely a heroic one.
