The Cay – Final Essay

In The Cay our hero Phillip, leaves home with his mother because World War 2. He is then separated from her when the S.S Hato was torpedoed and sank. He is brought aboard by a tall black man named Timothy. During the next few months many things happened that transformed Phillip into a man. He creates a better world for himself because he now has grown up.
Phillip and his mom talk about leaving the island because of the war going on. His mom and dad argue all night about it because the father thinks it’s much safer on the island and can’t leave. Phillip’s mom made up her mind and they are now leaving on the S.S Hato from the Island of Curacao to Willemstad. Shortly after the two left the island the S.S Hato was torpedoed. After being torpedoed the boat went up in flames and Phillip and him mom were separated.
Phillip and Timothy are stranded a raft in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. After days on the water, Phillip becomes blind and Timothy spots a very small island known as the cay inside the Devil’s Mouth. After being stuck on the island Timothy starts to teach and mentor Phillip. He teaches him to fish and climb palm trees even though Phillip is blind. After Timothy slaps Phillip for calling him an old black man that can’t read Phillip realizes that timothy is just trying to help him. Phillip then helps Timothy recover from malaria. They start to prepare for the hurricane. During the hurricane Timothy dies and Phillip gets to work on fixing stuff around the island. He goes to fish for langosta hoping that if he drowns stew cat would save him. After getting bitten by a moray eel he scurries to get out of the water. He makes a fire to create black smoke hoping it will get he saved.
Phillip hears a plane above him. He is then rescued and regains his sight after seeing a doctor. He has now overcome his prejudice against other people that are different from him. Phillip’s story demonstrates a true Hero’s Journey. Phillip is called to an island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. During his journey he overcomes his prejudice side with help from Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be a true hero.
