The theme of this story "Gift of the Magi" is people go to extreme measures for people they love. For example Della (the girlfriend in the story) cut her long, beautiful hair to get money to buy her boyfriend a perfect Christmas present. Because she only had a $1.27 on Christmas Eve, which wouldn't be enough at all. Then James (Dellas boyfriend) sold his very old, valuable watch to buy Della a perfect Christmas gift. Because he was also short on money. Then in the end when they give each other the gifts they realise both the gifts that they got each other were for the valuable thing they had in the first place. So the theme is exactly right in this story, people do extreme things for there loved ones.
