It is chrismas eve Jim and Della have no money. JIm got paid $20.00 per week but that wasen't enough money. Della only had $1.87 to buy Jim a gift for chrismas.
Della went out to see what she could do to get some money and what they had for sale. Della was asking people how mutch money would they give her for her hair. Della sold her hair for $20.00 so she shaved it off.
Della bought a fob chain for Jim, but she was having doubts about Jim still liking her. When Jim got home he was asking questions about why Della had shaved her hair. Della told him she sold it to buy him a fob chain, and Jim told her he had sold his watch to buy her some combs for her hair. Della told him she bought him a fob chain but he had no clock to put it in any more and she had no hair to comb
